The co-founders of the collapsed crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital (3AC) have made a commitment to donate a portion of their earnings from their latest crypto venture to the creditors who suffered losses in the fund’s collapse in 2022. Kyle Davies, co-founder of 3AC, referred to this act as a “shadow recovery process” during a Twitter Spaces session on July 3.
Davies emphasized that it would be “good karma” to donate potential earnings from Open Exchange (OPNX) to 3AC’s creditors. He described this proposed payback scheme as an independent process, separate from the official liquidation process currently being handled by global consulting firm Teneo.
Davies claimed that this process is the first of its kind and would allow himself and his co-founder, Su, to contribute funds to the creditors, but only if they had been early supporters of OPNX. He noted that several creditors have already been fully compensated and stated that those who do not wish to engage with them are not obligated to do so.
When questioned about his involvement in a new venture while his bankrupt hedge fund was still undergoing liquidation, Davies argued that the creditors would ultimately benefit from the new company.
Davies and Su faced criticism when they announced the launch of OPNX on April 4, as some members of the crypto community accused them of neglecting their responsibilities related to the collapse of their hedge fund.
Three Arrows Capital filed for Chapter 15 bankruptcy protection on July 1, 2022, and subsequent court documents revealed that the fund owed over $2.8 billion to more than 20 firms.
The whereabouts of the co-founders remain unconfirmed, with liquidators resorting to serving them subpoenas through Twitter on January 5 due to difficulties in locating them. A recent report by The New York Times claimed that Davies and Su had been spending most of their time surfing in Bali.
Most recently, on June 27, liquidators announced their intention to recover $1.3 billion in lost funds from the co-founders of 3AC.
