The Brazilian central bank digital currency (CBDC), previously referred to as the “digital real,” has now been officially named and branded as the Drex.
On August 7th, the Central Bank of Brazil issued a press release introducing the new brand for its CBDC. The moniker “Drex” is an acronym: “‘D’ and ‘r’ symbolize Real Digital; the ‘e’ signifies electronic, and the ‘x’ represents modernity and connectivity, reflecting the utilization of distributed ledger technology (DLT).” Alongside the brand name, the central bank unveiled the visual identity of Drex.
The CBDC’s logo features two arrows, one embedded in the capital ‘D,’ illustrating the progression from the national fiat currency, the real, to its digital iteration. The color transition from blue to light green signifies the completion of a transaction.
In July, Pedro Magalhães, a blockchain developer and founder of tech consulting firm Iora Labs, reportedly identified functions in the Drex code that could enable a central authority to freeze funds or adjust balances. Additionally, Fabio Araujo, an economist at the Brazilian central bank, noted last year that the CBDC could potentially curtail bank runs in the country.
Recently, the Central Bank of Russia also unveiled the visual identity for its own CBDC, the digital ruble. The logo, featuring an international ruble symbol within a circle, is presented in four primary color combinations: red and white, or black and white.
