Gemini, the cryptocurrency exchange co-founded by the Winklevoss twins, has re-listed the XRP token associated with Ripple. A prominent figure in the XRP community, @RipplePandaXRP, shared a screenshot from the Gemini app to announce this development to fellow XRP enthusiasts. Following Ripple’s recent legal victory over the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), several exchanges have begun the process of relisting XRP.
The legal triumph unfolded in court under the oversight of Judge Analisa Torres. Her ruling established that the sales of Ripple’s XRP on the secondary market should not be classified as security transactions. This decision set them apart from the sales made by Ripple to institutional investors, which were deemed different. Intriguingly, the comprehensive list of cryptocurrencies officially designated as securities by the SEC did not include the XRP token.
David Schwartz, Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer, couldn’t help but express his satisfaction. He pointed out the omission of items like “orange groves,” “live beavers,” and “warehouse receipts for whisky casks” from the list, humorously highlighting XRP’s absence from it. In contrast, the list encompassed 48 other tokens, such as BNB, TRX, HEX, TON, LUNA, and ADA, among numerous other digital altcoins. Notably, neither Bitcoin nor Ethereum featured on the list. However, SEC leader Gary Gensler recently acknowledged the uncertain status of Ethereum (ETH), implying that it might eventually be considered a security. Nonetheless, this categorization does not currently extend to the flagship cryptocurrency, Bitcoin.
It’s worth noting that Ripple’s legal success may be temporary, as the SEC has lodged an appeal against the court’s decision. As of the time of writing, XRP is trading at $0.6314, according to data sourced from CoinMarketCap.
